Office of Safety, Health and Environmental Management

Our Mission

To assure SI organization and facilities operate and sustain a safe and healthful environment for employees, volunteers, and the visiting public, and to assure Smithsonian collections and property are protected, we in the Office of Safety, Health and Environmental Management (OSHEM):

  • Provide safety, occupational health, environmental management, and fire protection education, technical support and consultation services to the Smithsonian community.
  • Keep Smithsonian line management informed of applicable fire, safety and environmental management laws, regulations, and standards affecting Smithsonian operations.
  • Conduct regular compliance assessments and audits of Smithsonian facilities and programs.
