Construction Specifications
All construction specifications must be developed in the 50 Division Construction Specification Institute (CSI) MasterFormat System using the MasterSpecĀ® System. MasterSpecĀ® is a product of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is produced and published for the AIA by Deltek. In addition, the documents below are specification sections that have been tailored to meet specific requirements of the Institution and should be used when required by a particular design.
Smithsonian Specifications
Smithsonian Specifications are available in Volume 2 of the Smithsonian Design Standards. These specifications include but are not limited to General Requirements, Existing Conditions, Thermal and Moisture Protection, Conveying Equipment, Fire Suppression, Communications, Electronic Safety and Security, Exterior Improvements.
Cover Sheet
Construction Specification Cover Sheet: A title page for the specification book with the required signature block for the Associate Director of OPDC and containing a statement of conformance with the Smithsonian Directive (SD) 410.
Division 01000
Use the Division One MS Word guide specification for all projects, selecting either Large or Small project format. Careful editing is required by the Design Manager and the Architect-Engineer Design Team. For projects at NZP contact the Resident Engineer for assistance in developing a customized set of Supplementary Conditions.

Fire Protection and Life Safety
Refer to the Fire Protection & Life Safety Design Manual incorporated into the Smithsonian Design Standards as a resource for designers to supplement the minimum standards provide by building and fire codes and thus provide an enhanced level of fire protection and life safety for Smithsonian facilities, collections, occupants, and operations. The Smithsonian Office of Safety, Health, and Environmental Management approved guide specifications are also available through the Smithsonian Design Standards for use on Smithsonian projects and their use, where appropriate is mandatory.

Please request the Smithsonian Office of Protection Services documents from your COTR/OPDC Design Manager to assist in understanding and implementing physical and technical security standards in and around Smithsonian Facilities.
