National Zoological Park/SCBI-Bird House & Great Flight Aviary

Perched atop a hill, nestled in a quiet and forested section of the NZP, sits 46,090 square feet of indoor and outdoor exhibit space. The Great Flight Aviary, Bird House Plateau, historic Bird House, and the surrounding area encompass what has been known as the Great Flight Exhibit. The Bird House, a 26,700 square-foot building originally constructed in 1928, is the focal point. With the last major renovation more than 50 years ago, the interior included out-of-date exhibits, building systems, and a long list of deferred maintenance.
