The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR) performs day-to-day facilities operations and maintenance services to ensure a safe and clean environment for staff and visitors. Like a museum exhibit, OFMR's work is on display 364 days a year, requires extensive behind-the-scenes support, and directly affects the quality of the visitor experience. The OFMR team is dedicated to working side-by-side with each museum to endure the facility and the collections it holds meets a world-class standard.
Central Services
The Energy Management Branch of the Systems Engineering Division is the OFMR unit responsible for reimbursable utility metering and billing. This branch establishes basic Smithsonian energy management policy and assigns responsibility for administering a comprehensive energy management program. The program includes all energy use and conservation techniques designed to meet the current and future energy needs of the Smithsonian Institution.
This division provides a wide range of pan-Institutional services including Mail, Fleet Management, Transportation Services, Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Audio-Visual Services in support of special events.
The Asset Management Division (AMD) coordinates activities on behalf of OFMR to attain maximum value from SI assets to increase their value to stakeholders and achieve SI’s organizational objectives. AMD achieves this through the work of the Reliability Engineering Branch and the Predictive Maintenance and Work Management Branch.
The Business Operations Division (BOD) is the OFMR central resource that provides integrated financial, asset, and human capital management services that enable the operations and maintenance of Smithsonian facilities.
Operations and Maintenance
The OFMR Zones perform day-to-day facilities operations and maintenance services to ensure that the facilities are safe and clean for the collections, visitors and staff. These services include custodial, labor and utilities work, recycling, building maintenance and management, systems engineering, and administrative services. Zone Management accomplishes its work through in-house and contracted services. With such a large campus we geographically organize our facilities into eight zones.

- South Mall Zone (Arts & Industries Building, Asian Art Museum, Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, National Museum of African Art, SI Building, Castle)
- East Mall Zone (National Air & Space Museum, National Air & Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport, Virginia, National Museum of the American Indian)
- West Mall Zone (National Museum of African American History and Culture, National Museum of American History)
- Upper Northwest Zone (National Zoological Park, SI Conservation Biology Institute)
- Gallery Place / Environmental Research Center Zone
- New Zone (Cooper Hewitt and National Museum of the American Indian, New York)
- Suitland Zone (Anacostia Community Museum, American Indian Museum, Cultural Resources Center)
Central Maintenance Division (CMD) consists of five (5) Units. The five Units are: High Voltage Shop, Fire/Life Safety Shop, Building Automation System (BAS) Shop, Central Shop and USRO 3rd Shift.
