All students applying for a Smithsonian Facilities Internship opportunity must apply using the Smithsonian On-line Academic Appointment System (SOLAA).


Application Requirements:

  • Submit an on-line application.
  • Be sure to indicate the session you are applying for (Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter)
  • Essay describing background, interest in field, career goals and why you chose the internship opportunity (1-2 pages),
  • Resume,
  • Academic Transcriptions, and
  • Two Letters of Recommendation
Duration: In general internship durations will follow the schedule below however, there is room for flexibility.

Winter: 4 - 6 weeks | Spring: 10 - 14 weeks | Summer: 10-16 weeks | Fall: 10-14 weeks

Application due dates:

Fall 2017: June 26, 2017

Winter 2017/2018: September 29, 2017

Spring 2018: October 30, 2017

Summer 2018: February 16, 2018

All applications must be recieved in SOLAA by 11:59pm on the above date.

Eligibility & Qualifications for Prospective Smithsonian Facilities Interns:

  • Must be in good academic standing at college/university
  • Most require English proficiency in written and oral communication.
  • Must submit complete application package through SOLAA
  • Must pass background investigation
  • Must provide and verify housing for term of internship
  • Must provide proof or citizenship or F-1 Visa
  • Must have a bank account for direct deposit of stipend payments
  • We are currently not accepting high school student applicants for our internship programs.
